ADA Survey Report sees few improving indicators with cautious outlook

A recent ADA survey noted that 27 percent of survey respondents expect to purchase new equipment this year. The same study continues to confirm what the ADA suspected was true, 2009 was a difficult year for dentists. “However, most economists believe the worst of the Great Recession is behind us. Let’s continue to hope that there is no place to go but up from here.”

The report goes on to say that the gross billings index shows that fewer dentists reported lower and more reported higher gross billings for the fourth quarter of 09 than the third quarter.

In another tidbit from the report “New dentists, those who have been practicing for less than 10 years, were the only group who reported that net incomes had increased. Net incomes in 2009 also declined across all regions based on the responses to the survey.”

ADA members can link to the surveys through the Dental Practice hub Web page www.dentalpracticehub.ada.org or at www.ada.org/goto/freereports. You must be an ADA member to access the content of these reports and the survey.

Business as usual

Based on this report, business as usual is not enough. You’ll need to figure out a way to stand out from the crowd, increase your treatment acceptance rate, keep a close eye on your financials, and keep your current patients coming back. The biggest asset you have is your team. They interact with your patients more than you, so it is fair to say, your patients form an opinion about your practice by the way they were treated by your team as well as you. This means that you need to invest some time to train your staff, provide them with a comfortable and a productive working environment. It may appear that taking action may cost you money, and it may, but it is an investment.
